TRUE STORIES OF HERO DOGS!

When an emergency arises or tragedy strikes, sometimes the best thing to have around is a dog! Stories of dogs going above and beyond for their humans go back as far as the printed word. Here are just a few accounts of dogs who made the news with their heroic acts.

NAPOLEON

Napoleon the bulldog swam out to the middle of a deep lake to rescue 6 kittens in a burlap sack, despite his breed’s poor swimming abilities and natural aversion to felines!

BRUTIS

Brutis the Golden Retriever saved a young child from an approaching coral snake, snatching it out of the way in the nick of time. He received an almost fatal bite, but also the National Hero Dog award in 2004.

BLUE

Blue saved his 85-year-old owner from an alligator attack after she had fallen while walking him. The Australian Blue Heeler fought the gator long enough to scare him away, earning himself the 2001 “Dog Hero of the Year” honor.

KANKUNTU

Kankuntu actually saved his family from pirates at sea! When their yacht began to be hijacked by armed robbers, the lion-hearted mixed breed attacked them ferociously. He sustained both a bullet and stab wound, but recovered completely, and the family was able to continue on their voyage.

TOBY

Toby the Golden Retriever performed the canine version of the Heimlich Maneuver on his owner. When he saw that she had begun choking on an apple, he jumped onto her chest and dislodged the obstruction. He was awarded with ASPCA’s “Dog of the Year” in 2007.
